Your Child Will Learn
Written words in books have meanings that correspond with the pictures
Here’s What to Do
- Choose a book with short sentences and lots of pictures.
- While reading the book to your child, ask them questions about the pictures.
- Point to the words that match the pictures.
- Continue on each page of the book.
Put PEER Into Action
PAUSE
- Sit in a quiet and relaxing space free from distraction.
ENGAGE
- When pointing to the pictures in the book, ask your child questions like “what is that” and “where have you seen this before”?
- “Look, the picture has a dog. This is the word dog, right here. This is the word “yellow,” and look, the picture matches. It’s a yellow dog!”
ENCOURAGE
- Ask your child to repeat the words you read and point to the pictures that represent them.
- Respond to your child if they notice anything about the pictures or ask questions about them.
REFLECT
- Summarize what you learned today: that pictures and words in a book work together to tell a story!
Not Quite Ready
Ask your child to find an object/person/animal in book illustrations as you read.
Ready for More
As you read a book with your child, talk about the meaning of different punctuation marks.
