Your Child Will Learn

A song to help transition between different parts of the day

Here’s What to Do

  1. As you start a routine or activity, sing a song about what’s coming up next in your day. You can use the tune of “Mulberry Bush” or another song you know.
  2. Sing the same song at different points of the day, whenever you are switching activities. Examples:
    • Putting on clothes
    • Cleaning up
    • Getting ready to leave
    • Getting ready to eat
    • Taking a bath
  3. When you finish singing the song, talk through what will happen next in your day.
  4. Repeat every day to help your baby transition more easily between activities.

Put PEER Into Action

PAUSE

  • Smile at your baby and give their hands or toes a gentle squeeze.

ENGAGE

  • To the tune of “Mulberry Bush”: “This is the way we change our diaper, change our diaper, change our diaper. This is the way we change our diaper, every single day!”
  • “Now that we finished eating. What should we do next? Yes, it will be time to play!”

ENCOURAGE

  • As you sing the song, watch your baby’s expressions. That will help you determine what you will do next.
  • Continue to make eye contact and smile as you sing and talk.

REFLECT

  • Share with your baby what you love most about your time together.

Not Quite Ready

Your baby may not seem like they’re understanding transitions, but you’re helping lay a foundation for positive rhythms and routines.

Ready for More

As your baby’s motor skills increase, invite them to help with parts of the routine like holding a spoon or a cup.

As Your Child Masters This Skill

They will know that it’s time to do something else whenever they hear the routine song
