Your Child Will Learn
A song to help transition between different parts of the day
Here’s What to Do
- As you start a routine or activity, sing a song about what’s coming up next in your day. You can use the tune of “Mulberry Bush” or another song you know.
- Sing the same song at different points of the day, whenever you are switching activities. Examples:
- Putting on clothes
- Cleaning up
- Getting ready to leave
- Getting ready to eat
- Taking a bath
- When you finish singing the song, talk through what will happen next in your day.
- Repeat every day to help your baby transition more easily between activities.
Put PEER Into Action
PAUSE
- Smile at your baby and give their hands or toes a gentle squeeze.
ENGAGE
- To the tune of “Mulberry Bush”: “This is the way we change our diaper, change our diaper, change our diaper. This is the way we change our diaper, every single day!”
- “Now that we finished eating. What should we do next? Yes, it will be time to play!”
ENCOURAGE
- As you sing the song, watch your baby’s expressions. That will help you determine what you will do next.
- Continue to make eye contact and smile as you sing and talk.
REFLECT
- Share with your baby what you love most about your time together.
Not Quite Ready
Your baby may not seem like they’re understanding transitions, but you’re helping lay a foundation for positive rhythms and routines.
Ready for More
As your baby’s motor skills increase, invite them to help with parts of the routine like holding a spoon or a cup.
As Your Child Masters This Skill
They will know that it’s time to do something else whenever they hear the routine song
