Your Child Will Learn

How to identify the main character, beginning, and end of a story.

Here’s What to Do

  1. Read a book with your child.
  2. At the end of the story, ask your child who the main character was.
  3. Ask your child to remember what happened in the beginning and end of the story.
  4. Repeat for each book you read this week!

Put PEER Into Action

PAUSE

  • Put your hands on your head. Take a deep breath and ‘use your hands’ to help your brain remember a happy memory.

ENGAGE

  • “The main character is the person or animal the story is about. Who was the main character in this book?”
  • “What happens at the very beginning of that story? How does the story start?”

ENCOURAGE

  • If your child can’t remember what happens in the beginning and the end, look through the illustrations to help jog their memory.
  • “You’re right, the dog was an important character in the story. But who do we spend the most time with? Maybe we can look at the pictures to help us remember.”

REFLECT

  • Is your child able to name the main character, beginning, and ending?

Not Quite Ready

Ask questions about what happened in the story and see if your child can answer them.

Ready for More

Ask your child to re-tell as much of the story as they can.
