Shopping for Numbers

Your Child Will Learn

Recognizing Numerals 1-20

Here’s What to Do

  1. Before heading to a store, make a “number shopping list”- write numbers 1-20 on a piece of paper and draw a checkbox next to each number.
  2. When you arrive at the store, ask your child to look for each number (in aisle numbers, price signs, on packaging).
  3. When your child finds a number, ask them to make a mark in the checkbox next to it.
  4. Can your child find all numbers 1-20? If they do, celebrate with a high five or a silly dance!

Put PEER Into Action

PAUSE

  • Hand your child the number shopping list and something to write with, and say, “let’s go on a number hunt together!  Ready, set, go!”

ENGAGE

  • “Today your mission is to find each of these numbers. Where do you see a number here in the store? Is it one of the numbers on your list?”
  • “What number is this? 15, yes! Can you check it off your list?”

ENCOURAGE

  • “I think this is one of the numbers you still need. It’s a 1 and a 7 together. Do you know what number is a 1 and a 7 next to each other? A 1 and a 7 is seventeen. It’s this one on your list.”
  • Number names for 11-19 are tricky because they don’t follow the regular pattern (i.e. “eleven” is a strange word, it’s not “ten-ty one” like “21, 31, 41, etc.). Once your child learns the tricky 11-19 numbers, they’re well on their way to recognizing even higher numbers that do follow the naming pattern.

REFLECT

  • Are there any numbers that your child is still not sure about? Tell them that next time you go to a store, you can try looking just for those to get extra practice.

Not Quite Ready

Look for numbers around the house instead of in a store.

Ready for More
