How to notice and react to music
Here’s What to Do
- Play lots of different types of music for me throughout the day. Help me feel the rhythm of the music by moving to the beat when you’re holding or rocking me.
- Introduce nursery rhymes and songs with simple hand movements (like “Itsy Bitsy Spider,” “Wheels on the Bus,” or any other song you like).
- Try using music to help me adjust to transitions in daily routines, like when I first wake up, when I’m going down for a nap, or at bedtime.
- When I’m fussy, try singing, humming, or turning on music.
Put PEER Into Action
PAUSE
- Pick me up and give me a snuggle.
ENGAGE
- “Let’s listen and dance to the music. This song is slow so I’m rocking slowly back and forth, back and forth.”
- See if you can match the music to the moment- an energetic song when you’re getting ready for the day and a slow song when you’re getting ready for bed.
ENCOURAGE
- “Oooh, seems like you’re having some big feelings right now. Let’s try listening to some music and see if that helps us feel calm.”
- If you hear me vocalize, respond to my sounds. Like: “Goooo, yes, you’re singing to the music!”
REFLECT
- Do I seem to like some songs or types of music more than others?
