Your Child Will Learn
How to begin playing with a friend
Here’s What to Do
- Ask your child what they usually do when they want to start playing with a friend.
- Share three steps they can try:
- Step 1: Wait and Watch
- Step 2: Share ideas for playing together
- Step 3: Ask, “Can I play?”
- Give a few examples of what they might say, using the 3 steps.
- Practice! Ask them to try joining in play with a sibling or someone else in the house. Remind them of the three steps.
Put PEER Into Action
PAUSE
- Slowly count backwards: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
ENGAGE
- An example of how to join in:
- “If I saw some friends playing together, this is what I’d do. First, I’d wait and watch and see what they were already playing.”
- “Then, I’d share my idea for playing, like: ‘Do you need someone else to be a firefighter?’”
- “Last, I’d ask, ‘Can I play firefighters with you?’”
- “Let’s go practice joining in. I see your sister is playing over there, let’s use the three steps to see if you can join her. Do you remember Step 1?”
ENCOURAGE
- Help your child remember the steps any time they want to join in play.
- “It can feel hard to start playing with other kids sometimes. Luckily, it gets easier the more you practice!”
REFLECT
- “What happens when you forget your words to ask how to play? What happens when you remember?”
Not Quite Ready
Break down the steps and try them one by one. Eventually, add them all together.
