Your Child Will Learn
Families pass down recipes for memories and special occasions
Here’s What to Do
- Think of a family recipe that is connected to a memory or special occasion
- Share how you learned the recipe, who taught it to you, and explain any cultural significance
- Follow the recipe with your child, allowing them to take the lead in measuring, mixing, or preparing the ingredients
- Write down the recipe and have your child draw pictures of the ingredients around the recipe
Put PEER Into Action
PAUSE
- Do this activity at a table where you can be at eye-level with your child
ENGAGE
- Smile, laugh, and have fun while doing this activity! Share a memory you have about the recipe
- Let your child taste the ingredients (if it is safe) and ask them to describe the flavors
ENCOURAGE
- This may get messy, but that’s okay! Compliment your child’s ability and presence in the kitchen
- Count the measurements of ingredients out loud with your child
REFLECT
