Tear paper to create an artistic collage

Here’s What to Do

  1. Give your child 5-6 strips of colored paper
  2. Demonstrate tearing the strips into smaller pieces
  3. Give your child paper and glue to create a collage with the torn pieces

Put PEER Into Action

PAUSE

  • Tear a strip of colored paper in front of your child to get their attention

ENGAGE

  • Explain to your child that a collage is a picture made from smaller pieces of paper
  • Ask your child, “what can you make with these torn pieces of paper”?

ENCOURAGE

  • Ask your child, “can you tear big and small pieces of paper”?
  • Ask your child, “should the pieces of paper be close together or far apart”?

REFLECT

  • Ask your child to describe the picture they made with the torn pieces of paper

Ask your child to create a simple shape like a circle, square, or triangle with the torn pieces of paper

Give your child a specific idea or prompt for creating a torn paper collage, like an animal or insect
