Your Child Will Learn

Cut paper with scissors to create an artistic collage

Here’s What to Do

  1. Give your child 5-6 strips of colored paper
  2. Discuss and model the safe use of scissors
  3. Demonstrate using the scissors to cut the strips of paper into smaller squares or triangles
  4. Give your child paper and glue to create a collage with the cut pieces

Put PEER Into Action

PAUSE

  • Cut a strip of colored paper with scissors in front of your child to get their attention

ENGAGE

  • Model placing your thumb and fingers inside the handles of scissors
  • Model opening and closing your hand to demonstrate cutting

ENCOURAGE

  • Your child may get frustrated with cutting, so go slow and reassure them that they can learn just like you did
  • Compliment and praise your child while they cut

REFLECT

  • What other things can we make or do to practice cutting with scissors?
