Your Child Will Learn

Use paper mache sculpture to create a bowl

Here’s What to Do

  1. Mix 1 part water, 1 part flour, and 2 tablespoons of liquid white glue in a bowl until the consistency is similar to pancake batter
  2. Blow up a balloon and help your child cover half of it with pre-cut strips of paper that have been dipped into the mache mix; once the balloon is covered in strips, let it dry overnight
  3. The next day, pop and extract the balloon so that you have one bowl
  4. Let your child decorate the bowls with paint

Put PEER Into Action

PAUSE

  • Show your child a decorative bowl and tell them that they will make their own with paper mache

ENGAGE

  • Let your child help with mixing the paper mache recipe
  • Ask your child, “what kind of colors, lines, shapes, and patterns can you paint on your bowl”?

ENCOURAGE

  • Hold the balloon while your child applies the mache strips to it
  • Compliment and praise your child’s painting choices for decorating the bowl

REFLECT

  • Ask your child, “what can we put inside this bowl”?
