Your Child Will Learn

Make marks and patterns with a sponge on paper

Here’s What to Do

  1. Put a few dots of paint on a plate or tray.
  2. Give your child sponges of different shapes and sizes.
  3. Optional: Cut the sponges into squares, circles, triangles, diamonds, and etc.
  4. Model stamping the sponge into the paint and then onto paper.

Put PEER Into Action

PAUSE

  • Work on a flat surface and get on eye-level with your child

ENGAGE

  • Ask your child to name the colors of the paints
  • Ask your child to name the shapes of the sponges

ENCOURAGE

  • Show your child how to make an alternating pattern with the sponges
  • It’s okay if your child uses the sponge to make abstract designs or blotches.  Follow their interests to enjoy the activity together.

REFLECT

  • Was your child able to create their own patterns with the sponges?

Not Quite Ready

Your child may mix the paint colors and make a mess with the sponges, but this is developmentally appropriate so focus on what they are able to create

Ready for More

Ask your child to create figures and objects with the sponges, like using the circle and triangle sponges to create a fish

As Your Child Masters This Skill

They will create an artistic composition with the sponge stamps
