Snack Addition with Malikk

Snack Addition with the Holloways

Your Child Will Learn

Solving addition problems that add up to 10

Here’s What to Do

  1. Put 5 small pieces of food (like cereal) on a plate. Count with your child.
  2. Ask your child: “How many more do you need to add up to 10?”
  3. Check their answer.  Add [amount child answered] to the plate and count again. Are there 10 total?
  4. Repeat, starting with different amounts of food between 1-9. When you’re done playing, eat your snack!

Put PEER Into Action

PAUSE

  • High five before you begin!

ENGAGE

  • “How many do we need to get to 10? Let’s add that many and see if we end up with 10.
  • “How many are there all together?”

ENCOURAGE

  • Remind your child that their brain gets stronger when they’re working on something tricky.
  • Keep wrong answers low pressure. Try saying, “Hmmm… That’s not 10- let’s try again!”

REFLECT after you’re done:

  • Did any part of that game seem hard? Did any part of it seem easy?
  • What else could we use to practice addition, besides snacks?

Not Quite Ready

Use smaller numbers of snacks (try adding up to 5 first)

Ready for More

Play the same game but add up to 20.
