Your Child Will Learn

To explore a sensory art experience

Here’s What to Do

  1. Pour small amounts of paint into clear plastic bags that can be sealed; make sure the bags don’t have holes
  2. Release the air out of the bags so they are flat.  Lay them on a table in front of your child.
  3. Have your child watch as you use your fingers to make lines and shapes on top of the bags.
  4. Encourage your child to make lines and shapes on top of the bags.

Put PEER Into Action

PAUSE

  • Smile, laugh, and make eye contact with your child as you start this activity

ENGAGE

  • Hold up the bags in front of your child for them to grasp or hold. Encourage them to explore the bags.
  • Describe the kind of lines and shapes you make on top of the bags, “this is a straight line, this is a squiggly line, this is a triangle, this is a circle”

ENCOURAGE

  • Your child may initially just tap the bags and this is okay; continue to model using your fingers to make lines and shapes.
  • Your child may drop the bag a few times, so consistently pick up the bag and place in their hands.

REFLECT

  • Ask your child as they touch the bags, “how does it feel” and “what can you make”

Not Quite Ready

Demonstrate this activity in front of your child a few times while your child sits in your lap with their hands on top of your hands.

Ready for More

Give your child bags of paint with combinations of primary colors that will mix to make secondary colors. Your child can notice color changes as they draw lines and shapes on top of the bags.
